The tube is manufactured like the glass evacuated tube under the vacuum condition. Vacuum is the key to solar water heaters. 

The water inside the copper heat pipe is in a vacuum state with reduced pressure and boils at a much lower temperature of only 30C. The boiling water generates steam vapor that goes to the top of the heat pipe and then into the expansion bulb. 

The bulb is inserted into a copper heat exchanger and the hot steam loses its temperature and pressure and gets back to water. The cycle goes on continuously without involving any moving parts. That means, the life of solar vacuum tubes is over twenty years.
